Dubai Launches Major Road and Metro Upgrades to Cut Travel Time and Ease Congestion
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has launched a series of large-scale infrastructure development projects to improve traffic flow, enhance road safety, and support the growing needs of the city’s expanding population.
Expansion of Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station
In collaboration with Emaar Properties, the RTA is expanding the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station. The project will increase the station’s area from 6,700 to 8,500 square metres and raise its capacity by 65%, enabling it to handle up to 220,000 passengers per day.
The upgrade includes more escalators, elevators, pedestrian bridges, and improved entrances and exits to support smoother passenger movement, especially during peak events like New Year’s Eve.
Temporary Traffic Diversion on Al Qudra Road
Starting June 22, 2025, the RTA will implement a five-month traffic diversion on Al Qudra Road at the Arabian Ranches junction. The traffic signal at the intersection with the road to Dubai Studio City will be removed, and traffic will be rerouted to create a free-flowing corridor.
Two new signal-free U-turns will also be built to maintain smooth movement between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street. Motorists are advised to plan ahead, avoid peak hours, and depart early.
Major Intersection Upgrades in Jumeirah and Al Mina
The RTA has completed a critical upgrade at the intersections of Jumeirah Street and Al Mina Street with Sheikh Rashid Street. The project includes bridges and tunnels extending over 13 km, increasing road capacity from 6,400 to 24,000 vehicles per hour — nearly a 4x boost.
The improvements are expected to reduce travel time from 32 minutes to 12 minutes, significantly improving mobility across central Dubai.
Development of Al Jamayel Street (Formerly Garn Al Sabkha Street)
The RTA is also developing Al Jamayel Street, a 7-kilometre corridor connecting key areas like Jumeirah Lakes Towers, The Gardens, and Al Furjan.
The project will include the construction of four new bridges totaling 2,874 metres, increasing road capacity to 17,600 vehicles per hour. Key travel time reductions include:
- From Al Jamayel Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road: 20 → 12 minutes
- From Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Al Yalayis Street: 21 → 7 minutes
Dubai’s Vision for Smart, Sustainable Mobility
These upgrades align with Dubai’s broader vision of becoming a smart, connected, and sustainable city. By modernizing infrastructure and integrating alternative transport modes like e-scooters and bicycles, the RTA continues to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
