The new system will simplify data acquisition about flights.
The Canadian company Searidge Technologies was engaged in development of new system for air traffic controllers which after end of the project and tests will be gradually developed at the international airport of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. As writes Aviation Week, the new system created by the principle of augmented reality will allow air traffic controllers in a convenient visual form to obtain information on controlled flights and will save them from commission of some mistakes.
Air traffic controllers are responsible for safety and orderliness of the movement of aircraft and also for calculation and the choice for them the most economic routes. They accompany take off and landing of planes, a safe divergence of aircrafts in air at the big density of traffic and also taxing of aircraft on an airfield zone. Work of the air traffic controller almost on a half consists of input and data processing about the accompanied flights to dispatching systems that can slow down functioning of the airport during loading.
The new system for air traffic controllers developed by Searide Technologies is designed to facilitate dataful operation. She received the name EAVD (Enhanced Airport Vision Display, the display of expanded vision of the airport). The semi-panoramic display and a computing subsystem is a part of system. During an operating time the system receives video data from surveillance cameras of an airfield part of the airport and also data from the instrumental systems providing data on this or that airplane.
On the display for the air traffic controller the scheme of airfield with the closed and open zones designated in red and green color is displayed. Such color marking will allow to avoid mistakes when air traffic controllers sent the plane after landing in temporarily closed a zone of airfield.
Besides, thanks to the scheme air traffic controllers will obtain data on that, where exactly at present there are planes. The expert will also be able to obtain more detailed information on zones. The control system of zones at the airport of Dubai is already installed.
EAVD provides the mode of augmented reality in case of which the air traffic controller can see the image of aircraft from one of surveillance cameras of high definition. At the same time on the image information on this or that airplane, including the speed, height, change of spatial coordinates and the flight number will be superimposed automatically. EAVD provides also placement of the surveillance camera at the end of a runway with the review along the central line of a marking.
In the mode of display of a strip the air traffic controller in real time will see data on the taking-off plane and also on the boards expecting waiting list for take-off. To EAVD it is planned to add artificial intelligence which will act as a virtual assistant of the air traffic controller.
He won't be able to operate flights, but, according to the statement of Searidge Technologies, will act as some kind of "spell check" — if the air traffic controller gives potentially dangerous instructions to crews of planes, the system will offer correction options.
Earlier it became known that the French company Thales intends to begin in 2025 mass production of new systems for control offices of the airports which will allow dispatchers to operate air traffic by means of eyes and gestures. The new system is designed to solve a data input automation problem to release dispatchers for the solution of much more important tasks. New development has received the name Shape.
The big flat touch screen which is used as the table plane is a part of this station of the dispatcher. Besides, Shape have switched on also the second display to which all necessary information on the accompanied flights is output. All interaction with necessary data with the help of the Shape workstation is planned to be reduced to gestures: with their help the dispatcher will be able to open the necessary menu, to enter necessary information, to move data on the accompanied flights to the information display and to move away them from him.
The Shape system by means of cameras will be able to monitor and movements of eyes of the manager. By means of this function the expert will be able to select necessary flight on the information display and by means of the touchpad to make necessary changes.
The system of tracking the direction of eyes will be calibrated under each specific dispatcher. At last, in Shape microphones and the system of recognition of voice commands will be used. With their help the system can dictate necessary data on this or that flight.
