Abu Dhabi’s A2RL Powers Into Second Season at Yas Marina Circuit
The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) will return for its second season on November 15, 2025, bringing cutting-edge autonomous vehicle technology back to the iconic Yas Marina Circuit. After an electrifying debut in April 2024 that drew more than 10,000 spectators and over one million online viewers, the 2025 edition promises a stronger global lineup, next-generation racecars, and an expanded $2.25 million prize pool.
Global Field Expands to Ten Nations
A2RL’s international footprint is growing fast. France and Japan join the league for the first time, while the United States, Germany, China, Singapore, Italy, and the UAE return to defend and challenge for the title. The inclusion of new teams strengthens A2RL’s reputation as one of the most diverse and technically advanced arenas for autonomous systems.
This global participation underlines the league’s mission: to push the limits of artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous mobility through real-world, high-speed racing.
Emirates Autonomous Vehicle 24: Faster, Smarter, UAE-Built
At the heart of the 2025 season is the Emirates Autonomous Vehicle 24 (EAV-24) — an upgraded autonomous racecar built and developed in the UAE. Based on the Dallara Super Formula SF23 chassis, the EAV-24 integrates enhanced sensor suites, advanced compute systems, and refined control algorithms to handle the extreme dynamics of open-wheel racing.
Weighing 690 kilograms and capable of speeds up to 300 km/h, the SF23 platform is the fastest open-wheel car after Formula One. Its sustainable bio-composite materials, drive-by-wire controls, and custom AI stack create an ideal proving ground for cutting-edge driving intelligence.
Virtual Racing Debuts: SIM-Sprint
A major innovation this year is the launch of the SIM-Sprint, a series of official virtual races. These events give teams the ability to train and test AI models in controlled, repeatable environments, tackling complex or rare racing scenarios that are difficult to reproduce on track.
The SIM-Sprint is also part of A2RL’s long-term strategy to democratise autonomous racing. Future seasons will open virtual platforms to independent developers, engineering students, and global AI enthusiasts, creating a talent pipeline from simulation to real-world racing.
Driving Deep Tech and STEM Innovation
A2RL is more than a motorsport; it’s a strategic technology accelerator for the UAE. According to Faisal Al Bannai, Advisor to the UAE President for Strategic Research and Advanced Technology Affairs, the league is a living laboratory for mobility innovation.
“With A2RL, we’re not just testing autonomous technology; we’re accelerating its evolution in the most demanding conditions possible,” Al Bannai said. “It’s a platform where nations invest in deep tech and inspire future generations to think faster and build smarter.”
Stephane Timpano, CEO of ASPIRE, emphasised that combining physical and virtual racing creates a challenge-driven innovation model, encouraging faster engineering breakthroughs and real-world impact.
Abu Dhabi as a Global Hub for Autonomy
By hosting A2RL, Abu Dhabi is positioning itself as a global centre for high-performance autonomy, robotics, and AI research. The event complements the UAE’s broader national strategies, including the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031, which aims to make the country a world leader in AI-driven industries.
Beyond racing, the league is intended to inspire STEM talent, encourage cross-border collaboration, and demonstrate how advanced vehicle intelligence can translate from race circuits to everyday transport — from safer autonomous road cars to AI-assisted logistics.
What Fans Can Expect in Season Two
Spectators at Yas Marina Circuit will see more than just speed:
- Enhanced live data from each racecar’s autonomous systems, displayed in real-time.
- Immersive pit-lane access and fan zones, offering a closer look at engineering workflows.
- Expanded global broadcast and streaming for audiences worldwide.
- Greater prize incentives — with $2.25 million on the line to reward engineering excellence and strategic AI development.
Strategic Impact for the UAE Tech Ecosystem
A2RL is part of the UAE’s push to diversify its economy through advanced technology, creating opportunities for local talent, startups, and global partnerships. By combining motorsport, AI, and sustainability, Abu Dhabi is cultivating a high-value ecosystem that reaches far beyond the track.
Looking Ahead
As November approaches, teams are fine-tuning algorithms, upgrading hardware, and running endless simulation cycles. The season promises a dramatic showcase of autonomous racing’s future — where engineering precision and machine learning decide victory, not drivers.
For the UAE, it’s another signal to the world: Abu Dhabi is not only racing; it’s engineering the future of intelligent mobility.
