Abu Dhabi's Drone Delivery Trial: A Leap in Smart Mobility
The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), affiliated with the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has successfully completed a groundbreaking trial for parcel delivery using drones in Abu Dhabi. This initiative was conducted in collaboration with LODD Autonomous, a leader in smart delivery solutions and autonomous aerial logistics technologies.
Innovative Drone Delivery Trial
During the trial, a drone equipped with a robotic arm transported a parcel from Al Samha to KIZAD. The operation relied on an advanced navigation system, ensuring high accuracy and efficiency in delivery operations. This trial is part of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council’s (SASC) strategy to position Abu Dhabi as a leading hub for smart mobility.
Enhancing Abu Dhabi's Smart Mobility
The ITC is committed to adopting advanced transport systems that enhance service efficiency, enable sustainable infrastructure, and improve the quality of life across the emirate. The centre also regulates and manages drone operations through the Unified National Platform for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), ensuring compliance with laws, safety standards, privacy requirements, and airspace protection.
LODD Autonomous: Pioneering Hybrid Aircraft
LODD Autonomous showcased updates on its hybrid autonomous aircraft program, "Hili" (VTOL), designed for heavy air cargo. This innovative aircraft can carry loads of up to 250 kilograms over distances of 300 kilometers, powered by a system combining electric motors with an internal combustion engine. With vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capability, it operates without the need for conventional infrastructure like airports.
Impact on Logistics and Supply Chain
The "Hili" aircraft is expected to revolutionize medium-range air cargo by linking logistics hubs, enhancing supply chain efficiency, and supporting the growth of the logistics sector in the region. Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director-General of the ITC, emphasized Abu Dhabi’s commitment to adopting global innovations in transport and logistics, aiming to build a smart and sustainable transport ecosystem.
Commitment to Innovation and Efficiency
Rashed Matar Al Manai, CEO of LODD Autonomous, highlighted the efficiency and speed improvements in transport and distribution services through drone-based delivery systems. This innovation addresses the needs of supply chains and logistics amid rapid e-commerce growth, offering faster and more effective solutions. With drones, parcels can be delivered within hours, significantly reducing delivery times compared to traditional methods.
