UAE-based premium grocer Spinneys, a household name in the Gulf since opening its first Dubai store in 1961, is stepping onto the global stage with a bold move into Southeast Asia. The company announced a joint venture with Philippine conglomerate Ayala Corporation to introduce the Spinneys brand to the Philippines — marking its first expansion outside the GCC.
Under the terms of the deal, Ayala Corporation will hold a 60% stake while Spinneys retains 40%. The first store is scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2026, with plans to roll out additional outlets across the country in the following years.
“The Philippines offers significant long-term growth potential, with strong economic fundamentals, a growing affluent population, and increasing demand for high-quality offerings,” said Sunil Kumar, CEO of Spinneys. “Our partnership with Ayala combines its deep local knowledge with our operational expertise, providing a strong foundation to grow in a measured way.”
Why Southeast Asia and Why Now
Spinneys’ decision to enter Southeast Asia is driven by a convergence of favorable market conditions. The Philippines’ rapidly expanding middle and upper-income classes are demanding more premium retail experiences and higher-quality fresh food options. This trend mirrors what Spinneys has successfully capitalized on in the Gulf, where it has become synonymous with fresh produce, premium grocery items, and trusted international brands.
For Spinneys, Southeast Asia represents fertile ground for growth beyond the GCC, particularly as it seeks to diversify its revenue streams following its successful 2024 IPO on the Dubai Financial Market, which raised Dhs1.4 billion to fund expansion.
Ayala Corporation, one of the Philippines’ oldest and largest conglomerates, is a strategic partner with deep expertise in real estate development, logistics, and retail infrastructure. Its strong presence across malls and mixed-use developments provides prime store locations, ensuring Spinneys can quickly establish a premium footprint in bustling urban areas.
“We are honoured to be the first partner of Spinneys as it ventures outside the GCC,” said Cezar P. Consing, President and CEO of Ayala Corporation. “We hope this investment will catalyse trade and investment between the Philippines and the GCC.”
Building on Regional Growth Momentum
This Southeast Asian move comes on the heels of rapid GCC expansion. In June 2024, Spinneys opened its first store in Riyadh’s upscale An Nuzha district, a launch seen as the beginning of an ambitious plan to establish up to 12 stores across Saudi Arabia by 2028. The retailer also announced new Kuwait outlets and plans to add ten more stores in the UAE, strengthening its home market presence.
This measured but bold approach shows Spinneys’ strategy: establish dominance in the Gulf while expanding internationally into high-growth markets. The Philippines, with its rising purchasing power and appetite for premium grocery offerings, provides the perfect launchpad.
Two-Phased Expansion Strategy
The joint venture will roll out in two key phases:
- Operational Integration Phase — Spinneys will bring its expertise in fresh food sourcing, store design, and operational excellence to establish the first wave of stores and build local capability.
- Local Management Phase — Once operations stabilize, day-to-day management will transition to the joint venture, ensuring deep localization while maintaining brand standards and supply chain efficiency.
This hybrid model gives Spinneys the ability to maintain brand consistency while leveraging Ayala’s local market knowledge and networks.
Competitive Advantage: Premium Fresh Retail
Spinneys is widely recognized for its premium fresh produce, curated imported goods, and high service standards, differentiating it from mass-market supermarket chains. This competitive edge is expected to resonate strongly with Filipino shoppers seeking modern retail experiences and quality-focused grocery alternatives.
Moreover, Spinneys’ store designs — open layouts, curated gourmet aisles, and premium deli counters — are well-suited to Ayala’s high-traffic retail spaces, creating an aspirational yet accessible grocery destination.
A Growth Story Backed by IPO Capital
The brand’s IPO success in 2024, which raised over Dhs1.4bn ($381m), has provided the financial muscle for expansion. Investors welcomed the company’s focus on measured international growth rather than aggressive, high-risk rollouts.
Industry experts say the Philippine move is strategically sound: the market remains underpenetrated by premium grocers, and Spinneys enters with both capital and experience in scaling in diverse markets.
What It Means for the UAE & GCC
Spinneys’ Southeast Asian venture also has positive ripple effects for the UAE:
- Stronger trade links — The move could boost import-export flows, especially for fresh produce and specialty items sourced via Dubai’s logistics network.
- Brand influence — Spinneys’ global presence strengthens the reputation of UAE-grown brands abroad.
- Investor confidence — It showcases how UAE-based companies can expand internationally while maintaining profitability and operational excellence.
The Road Ahead
The first Philippine store opening in late 2026 will mark a pivotal milestone. Analysts predict rapid scaling in the following years if the rollout goes smoothly and Filipino consumers embrace the premium grocery model.
Key to success will be:
- Localized sourcing strategies alongside global supply chain expertise.
- Maintaining Spinneys’ premium brand promise while offering competitive pricing.
- Using Ayala’s prime locations to capture high-income urban shoppers.
If successful, the Philippines could become Spinneys’ springboard for broader Southeast Asian expansion — potentially into markets like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, where demand for premium food retail is accelerating.
Bottom Line
With its strategic partnership with Ayala Corporation, Spinneys is taking a confident, calculated step beyond the GCC, aiming to redefine premium grocery retail in Southeast Asia. The move underscores the UAE’s ability to produce globally competitive brands and signals a new era of international growth for the region’s homegrown retail champions.
