The car-hailing app returned to the UAE's capital in December
Emirati nationals in Abu Dhabi have begun chauffeuring Uber passengers in their private vehicles for the first time, the company announced on Sunday.
Uber was re-launched in the UAE’s capital in December 2018.
“We are proud to have made great progress since we announced Uber’s return to Abu Dhabi last month, with the first Emirati driver-partner on the app who has already embarked on his first trip in and around the capital,” said Timo Waked, the general manager of Uber in the MENA region.
In the future, Waked said that the company is “confident” that they will see an increase in the number of Emiratis “who seek Uber to make a flexible income, and we’re proud to continue to bring our technology to even more driver-partners and riders across the country.”
Additionally, Waked said that “Uber has always been an important market for Uber and we have worked collaboratively with ITC to align to their vision, and shown our commitment to fully supporting the city’s efforts in pioneering flexible, part time opportunities and an even better quality of life through urban mobility and smart initiatives.”
A landing page has been set up on the Uber website for Emiratis hoping to join the app, with requirements and terms and conditions including being over 21 years of age and in possession of a driver’s license for at least one year.
