Up to Dhs2,000 fine for littering cigarette butts in Abu Dhabi

The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) in Abu Dhabi has introduced new regulations aimed at improving the quality of life in the city and ensuring the cleanliness of public spaces. The DMT is urging the public to comply with these rules for the promotion of a sustainable environment.

The regulations include specific penalties for certain uncivil behaviors, such as discarding cigarette butts outside of designated containers. For a first-time offense, the fine will be Dh500, which will increase to Dh1,000 for a second violation, and escalate to Dh2,000 for the third and any subsequent offenses.

Additionally, financial penalties have been set for throwing away food and drink waste in locations not intended for such disposal. A first violation will result in a fine of Dh500, a second violation will incur a Dh1,000 penalty, and any further violations may be subject to fines of Dh2,000 or more.

For those found dumping or leaving waste in areas not designated for disposal, the initial penalty will start at Dh1,000. The fine will increase to Dh2,000 for a second violation, and each subsequent offense may incur a penalty of Dh4,000 or greater.
