The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced Ras Al Khaimah as the latest addition to its Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC).
GNLC is a forum that encourages the exchange of ideas and solutions for learning among members, promotes political dialogue and mutual learning, which helps to establish partnerships, as well as develop capacities and tools to encourage the construction of learning cities.
Membership was awarded due to Ras Al Khaimah's commitment to its vision of improving education outcomes across the Emirate, increasing the use of modern technology in the learning process, empowering communities and promoting a culture of lifelong learning, while enhancing the overall quality and excellence of the education sector.
Dr. Mohammed Abdullatif Khalifa, Secretary General of the Ras Al Khaimah Executive Council, said: “The accession of Ras Al Khaimah to the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities is an outstanding global achievement of the emirate. This testifies to the policy we are pursuing in the education sector, which covers all segments of society, regardless of their standard of living, and reflects the wise leadership of the UAE; the insightful and ambitious vision of His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the UAE and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah; and the continued support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud Al Qasimi, Crown Prince of Ras Al Khaimah and Chairman of the Executive Council, in accordance with the overall strategy of our country and its priorities in the field of global competitiveness.”
Munter Mohammed bin Shakar Al-Zaabi, Director General of Ras Al Khaimah Municipality, said: “Joining Ras Al Khaimah to the Global Network of Learning Cities underscores the Emirate's commitment to continuously improve its education sector and instill a culture of lifelong learning. This is expressed in providing people with educational programs that will allow them to achieve personal success, as well as contribute to the overall success of Ras al Khaimah.”
Ras Al Khaimah sees education as a vital pillar in its quest for a bright future for the nation and the Emirate, which is why it has created high-quality educational institutions that meet the highest international standards. Education plays a key role in Ras Al Khaimah's Vision 2030 strategy, which aims to ensure an inclusive education system for all. The Emirate is working on the creation of further programs aimed at improving vocational training and education in various disciplines.
The admission of Ras Al Khaimah to GNLC is the culmination of cooperation between the Ministry of Culture and Youth Affairs through its National Commission for Education, Culture and Science and the General Secretariat of the Ras Al Khaimah Executive Council, while the latter coordinates with all relevant structures in the emirate the preparation of a report and liaising with UNESCO on all necessary requirements to the introduction.
