Mussaffah toll gate set to be moved to the bridge to ensure full payment and avoid traffic snarl-ups
All motorists entering and leaving Abu Dhabi island will face road tolls from October 15, after authorities said they will prevent motorists from dodging the charge.
Abu Dhabi’s Department of Transport is set to move relocate one of the toll gates to ensure that drivers clog up a road in a bid to avoid payment.
The Mussaffah toll gate, currently located off-island in Abu Dhabi after the bridge will be moved to Mussaffah bridge, which is in line with other toll gates in the city.
The move will ensure drivers pay the AED4 rush hour toll or the AED2 non-peak hour charge and that there will be no major traffic issues caused by drivers looking to avoid the toll.
The movement of the bridge will take place before the tolls are introduced on October 15 next, Ebrahim Al Hamoudi, executive director of Department of Transport, Arabic daily Al Bayan reported. Other tolls have been placed at Sheikh Zayed, Maqta and Sheikh Khalifa bridges.
“The tolls will help police to enhance road safety and management,” said Maj Ahmad Al Shamsi of Abu Dhabi Police at the World Road Congress on Sunday.
“Every road faces challenges but this technology has been invested in and we will soon see that it is effective.”
Traffic officials in Abu Dhabi expect the introduction of road tolls will reduce traffic congestion by up to eight percent during peak hours.
