A driver's license in the UAE is a valuable acquisition and is among the main items on the resident's to-do list. The process of obtaining a license is very thorough, with several hours of driving lessons and multi-part assessments.
These procedures ensure that drivers will comply with the rules of the road as soon as they start driving their vehicles on the roads of the UAE.
Serious traffic violations, such as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, lead to the suspension of the license, in addition to fines and imprisonment by court order.
Violations related to a driver's license can result in fines of up to $3,000 and even the confiscation of the vehicle in some cases. Here is a list of penalties:
- Driving with a license issued by a foreign state, except in permitted cases: a fine of 400 dirhams
- Driving a vehicle with a license other than the one issued: a fine of 400 dirhams, 12 black points.
- Driving with an expired driver's license: a fine of 500 dirhams, 4 black points, 7-day confiscation of the vehicle
- Lack of a driver's license: a fine of 400 dirhams
- Failure to provide a driver's license when calculating the maximum number of black points for the first violation of traffic rules: a fine of 1,000 dirhams
- Failure to present a driver's license when calculating the maximum number of black points for a second violation of traffic rules: a fine of 2000
- Failure to provide a driver's license when calculating the maximum number of black points for the third violation of traffic rules: a fine of 3,000 dirhams
