Carrefour Jordan had announced late Monday in a Facebook post that it would no longer operate in the country
Majid Al Futtaim (MAF), the franchisee for Carrefour in the Middle East, announced on Tuesday that it has suspended operations for Carrefour Jordan and will replace it with a new brand called Hypermax. The company did not provide a specific reason for this decision.
Carrefour Jordan had previously announced on its Facebook page late Monday that it would cease operations in the country, thanking customers for their support and apologizing for any inconvenience caused, but did not explain the reasons behind the closure.
In an emailed statement, MAF noted that it “regularly reviews and assesses its businesses to ensure it remains agile in adapting to evolving market dynamics.”
Carrefour had launched in Israel in May of last year under a franchise agreement and has faced criticism from the Palestinian-led boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement due to its operations in the region.
The Facebook announcement by Carrefour Jordan was shared over 7,000 times, with many comments suggesting a connection between the closure and the ongoing boycott related to Israel’s military actions in the Gaza Strip.
MAF revealed that Hypermax is described as a "brand-new Arab grocery chain" that will be introduced across all 34 of its stores in Jordan, claiming that the new brand aligns with the preferences of Jordanian customers for locally sourced products.
It remains unclear whether the stores will close during the transition to Hypermax, as MAF stated it would strive to minimize any disruption for customers. A spokesperson for Carrefour declined to comment further, directing queries to Majid Al Futtaim.
