A new generation of Emirati passports will be issued from September 1, 2022, the Federal Office for Identification, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) announced on Thursday.
This represents a new technological leap in accordance with the instructions of the wise leadership to consolidate the movement towards a smart government to maximize the civilized status of the UAE within the framework of various public services provided and to meet modern security and technology requirements for identity verification, ICP added.
These passports are issued as part of the project of a new generation of Emirati passports and national identity cards, which was launched in June 2021.
Ali Muhammad Al Shamsi, Chairman of the Federal Office for Identification, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, said that the new generation of the UAE passport is part of the realization of the UAE government's vision to strengthen the UAE identity using the latest technologies and provide distinctive services for identity identification in accordance with the best international standards.
"This project aims to increase the flexibility of doing business related to individuals in various UAE institutions in order to improve the quality of life and provide a travel experience that strengthens the UAE's leading position," he added.
He confirmed that the Office will continue to improve and develop its services in accordance with future instructions from Governments around the world.
The new version of the Emirate passport has unprecedented technical characteristics and very complex security requirements to limit attempts at forgery or falsification. It is also equipped with the ability to print the owner's identification page using polycarbonate instead of paper, which increases the efficiency of specialized printing supported by photographs and protective signs characterized by its thickness to prevent damage. The passport will be easily processed at ports and is of high quality thanks to the use of laser technologies and three-dimensional material elements.
Improving the security criteria of the Emirati passport and providing it with leading technical characteristics in the field of travel, increasing security and safety requirements when moving or passing through international checkpoints, as well as supporting the diplomatic efforts of the UAE, which managed to emphasize the reliability of the Emirati passport in recent years, until it became the most powerful passport in the world.
Passports of the previous generation are considered valid, and their holders can use them for travel until the expiration of the passport, while an application for renewal can be submitted to obtain a new generation passport upon entry during the loan extension period, which is indicated 6 months before the expiration date specified in the passport. a document demonstrating that a new passport is considered a continuation of the previous one without any changes in the established fees or channels allocated for the provision of services for issuing or updating passports through the website www.icp.gov.ae or an intelligent UAEICP application.
Passport holders must check the validity of their documents for at least 6 months before traveling, with the possibility of issuing passports during their stay abroad through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the UAE represented by embassies and consulates of the state.
