UMM AL QUWAIN: The Civil Defence squads in Umm Al Quwain, supported by units from the departments of Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, Abu Dhabi and other police wings, extinguished a fire that broke out on Saturday evening at a petrochemical plant in the Umm Al Thaab industrial area of Umm Al Quwain. There were no casualties.
Major General Jassim Al Marzouqi, Commander of Civil Defence at the Ministry of Interior, who supervised the firefighting field operations along with Colonel Hassan Bin Saram, Director of Civil Defence Department in Umm Al Quwain, said that the fire was massive due to the activity of the plant, which also contained tanks for diesel fuel. The firefighters doused the flames without harming anyone and prevented it from extending to neighbouring factories, he added.
The operations room at the Civil Defence in Umm Al Quwain received a tip-off at 9pm on Saturday about the fire. Instantly, the firefighting squads rushed from the centres of Al Madina, Al Aqran and Al Rafe’ah to the site. Soon afterwards police patrols cordoned off the area. Also, squads of the Civil Defence from other emirates rushed to the place and helped in extinguishing operations.
