The three substations are scheduled to be delivered in 2019
Canadian contractor SNC-Lavalin announced on Wednesday that it has been awarded a $70 million contract to provide engineering and procurement services for three substations at the Meydan One real estate development in Dubai.
The mixed-use project, located within the District 1 development of Meydan, spans an area exceeding 3.6 million square metres, according to its website.
The Mahra, Jeyad and Forsan 132/11kV gas insulated switchgear (GIS) substations are scheduled to be completed in late 2019, SNC-Lavalin said in a press statement.
It said the deliverables for each of the three substations include design, procurement, installation and commissioning of the switchgear and transformers, as well as the civil design and delivery of three, two-storey buildings.
The statement noted that the three substations would form a key component of the electrical infrastructure of the development, which includes the 711-metre tall Dubai One Tower, Meydan One Mall, a five-star hotel, a civic plaza with dancing water fountains, an indoor sports facility, a four-kilometre canal and a marina. The development is expected to house a population of 83,000 people, it added.
Marie-Claude Dumas, president of SNC-Lavalin's Clean Power division, said that the firm has delivered more than 2,500 substations around the world.
“The Mahra, Jeyad and Forsan substations are a key part of this exciting development, helping to form the backbone of the electrical infrastructure that will address growth demand in the new Meydan One development.”
In October last year, Thomson Reuters Projects reported that Italian export agency SACE has guaranteed a $300 million loan for the $1.5 billion Meydan One Mall. Italy’s Salini Impregilo was awarded a $435-million construction contract for the project, located between Meydan and Al Khail Road, by the Meydan Group in March 2017.
