Apartments were rented on a daily and weekly basis, violating UAE residency law
Sharjah Municipality has seized 40 apartments as part of a campaign to eliminate illegal housing in the emirate after receiving complaints from residents.
The apartments were rented on a daily and weekly basis, violating the UAE residency law, authorities told Gulf News.
They also saw bachelors and families living in congested apartments and villas after using wooden or cardboard partitions to modify the properties.
Such violations pose a risk on the public’s health and safety, according to Khalifa Al Suwaidi, head of the Operation and Municipal Inspection Department at Sharjah Municipality.
He added that the department is taking strict measures against violators by cutting power supplies to the apartments.
The campaign, which started in Al Nahda, will be extended to other areas, where municipal inspectors will conduct daily visits to highlight the risks of congested apartments.
The inspectors also found unrelated men and women living in the same property, an arrangement that remains prohibited by UAE law, and referred such violations to the police.
Residents can file complaints about tenants sharing apartments illegally by calling Sharjah Municipality’s 24/7 hotline number 993.
