The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has issued 38,102 e-scooter permits in the first three months since the launch of the free online registration platform on the RTA website on April 28, 2022. The average daily number of permits issued was 423 permits.
The age group of 30-40 years accounts for the largest number of permits issued (15,807 permits), which is 41 percent of the permits issued to all other age groups.
The age group of 20-30 years occupied an equally prominent place in the total number of permits issued, amounting to 14,576 permits, followed by the age group over 40 years, and the last 1,570 permits for persons under 20 years.
These facts illustrate the huge interest in the use of electronic scooters among a wide range of community members of different age groups and the tendency to use this means of transportation, since it can easily deliver users to their destination.
In terms of nationality, Filipinos received 15,502 permits, followed by Indians (8,006 permits), ahead of Pakistanis (3,840 permits). The number of nationalities registered on the platform is 149 nationalities, which means the diversification of social segments that seek to benefit from the use of electronic scooters.
The results of the first three months since the launch of the platform also showed that 11,206 permit holders (29 percent) were tourists and visitors to Dubai.
These figures highlight the efforts of the Dubai government to transform Dubai into a cyclist-friendly city. They also reflect RTA's pioneering efforts to encourage residents and visitors to use e-scooters as an alternative means of individual mobility, which is considered ideal for both short trips and trips for the first and last mile.
To obtain a free permit, you must take an awareness-raising course conducted through the RTA website. Interns must be at least 16 years old. The training course includes lessons on the technical characteristics and standards of e-scooters, the duties of riders and areas where the use of e-scooters is allowed. The course also informs users about road signs and related symbols.
For those who use shared or individual e-scooters on specially designated streets, it is necessary to obtain a permit. However, obtaining scooter permits is not mandatory if riders are riding in places other than streets, such as bike lanes or sidewalks designated by the RTA. An exception to the course is granted to holders of valid driver's licenses or international driver's licenses.
The RTA calls on all people to comply with the rules of riding e-scooters in specially designated areas, such as wearing protective helmets and protective vests, avoiding the use of mobile phones, clearing streets in front of the entrance, avoiding entering pedestrian zones and equipping e-scooters with reflective signs to ensure the safety of users. and other road users.
