Ban to stay enforced for two weeks, according to DED, Dubai Municipality
Dubai has intensified its precautionary measures in a bid to stem the advance of the deadly coronavirus.
The Dubai Government issued a new order on Thursday, directing all food and beverage outlets to refrain from serving shisha to their customers.
The shisha ban takes effect immediately and will remain enforced for two weeks, according to an announcement by Dubai Media Office.
“As part of the precautionary measures to ensure public health, Dubai’s Department of Economic Development and Dubai Municipality direct all shisha cafes and coffee shops to stop serving shisha immediately, and for two weeks,” the announcement reads.
The move comes as the coronavirus continues to spread at an alarming rate in dozens of countries worldwide, prompting governments to lockdown millions of residents, shut schools, cancel events and suspend airline travel.
The virus, which has huge economic implications on the global economy, has now infected more than 127,000 people, with the death toll reaching nearly 5,000 as of Thursday afternoon.
First reported in Wuhan, China in late December, the coronavirus has now spread to every continent, prompting a series of travel restrictions; school and office closures and city lockdowns that are expected to impact business revenues.
On Tuesday, the UAE confirmed 15 new cases, bringing the total number of infected people in the country to 74.
The UAE, as well as several states in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have halted flights to several destinations in a bid to contain the virus.
