YouGov study of 30,000 people in 28 countries uncovers attitudes towards climate change across the world
Only half of UAE citizens believe the climate is changing and human activity is mainly responsible, revealed a report from research firm YouGov.
When asked to describe their views about the global environment, just 52 per cent of UAE respondents acknowledged manmade climate change as a reality, compared to 69 and 66 percent of respondents in Spain and Italy, respectively.
Around two in five (42 percent) of Egyptians said they believed in manmade climate change, followed by just one-third (35 percent) of respondents in Saudi Arabia.
A further seven per cent of Egyptian and Saudi Arabian residents acknowledged the climate is changing but said ‘human activity is not responsible at all’, while six per cent of UAE respondents also stated that climate change is not a manmade phenomenon.
Of the 30,000 people in 28 markets covered in the study, the percentage of respondents who don’t believe in manmade climate change is only higher in the United States (10 percent) and Norway (8 percent).
When asked whether their country could be doing more to tackle climate change, only half of those in the UAE (47 percent) said their nation could take more action on the environment, compared with 90 percent of Spaniards who believe their country could be ‘doing more’ to mitigate climate change.
“This [positive UAE sentiment] could be tied to the UAE’s Vision 2021 in which the government has set a roadmap for climate change mitigation, including 14 projects that are set to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, among other initiatives,” the report said.
