Four new metro stations have opened in Dubai.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates. A new branch of the Dubai Metro called "Route 2020" (Route-2020) began serving residents and visitors of the emirate on the first day of 2021.
At the first stage, 4 stations were opened: Jebel Ali (transfer station), The Gardens, Discovery Gardens and Al Furjan. Three more stations, including the final "EXPO-2020", will open later. The new line serves residential areas of Dubai with a population of more than 270 thousand people, including The Gardens, Discovery Gardens, Al Furjan, Jumeirah Golf Estates, Dubai Investment Park, as well as visitors to the EXPO 2020 exhibition town.
The first four stations were opened based on a number of criteria: the population of the area, the estimated number of passengers, business activity in the area, as well as the availability of other types of public transport.
On Friday, January 1, the first trains with passengers were launched from the final stations at 10: 00. In the future, the first electric train will depart from Jebel Ali and Al Furjan stations at 05:00 from Saturday to Wednesday, the last one at midnight. On Thursdays, trains will run from 05:00 to 01:00, on Fridays-from 10: 00 to 01: 00.
The journey time between the stations will be about 6 minutes. The new line will be served by 6 commuter trains per hour, which will run every 10 minutes. Thus, the route will serve more than 4 thousand passengers per hour in each direction. It is noted that the work of the new branch will be synchronized with the movement of trains on the " red " branch.
The new branch will also be served by 19 buses running on four routes. Two routes will pass through The Gardens station, the other two through Al Furjan station. On January 1, buses started running on routes F45 (from Al Furjan Metro Station to Discovery Gardens, every 20 minutes) and F56 (from Dubai Internet City Metro Station to Al Khail Metro Station every 15 minutes during peak hours).
In general, the "Route 2020" will carry 46 thousand passengers per hour in both directions. According to forecasts of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority, in 2021, the new line will be used by 125 thousand passengers per day, and by 2030 – 275 thousand passengers. During the days of EXPO 2020, only one station (Expo Station) will receive from 35 to 47 thousand passengers, or 29% of the total number of visitors to the world exhibition.
"Route 2020" with a length of 15 km connects the district of Jebel Ali and the exhibition town "EXPO-2020". The project cost was US$ 3 billion. The new line will run 50 trains of improved design, and the total length of the railway track of the Dubai Metro will increase to 90 km (up to 101 km, if you take into account the Dubai tram).
