Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is planning to build three new buildings to offer 36 additional bedrooms at Inverinate Estate
Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is planning a major expansion of his remote Highland estate in Scotland.
According to documents held by the Highland Council, planning applications have been submitted for three properties to be built at the Inverinate Estate in Wester Ross.
In total, the application - submitted by Sheikh Mohammed through Smech Properties - seeks to build an additional 36 bedrooms.
Supporting documents said the owners of Inverinate Estate typically "travel in large groups of immediate and extended family and friends" but in recent years their travel to Inverinate "has been limited by lack of accommodation".
It added that additional staff accommodation was completed in 2017 to create infrastructure that would support greater use of the estate by the owner and this new application seeks to create residential accommodation for the use of the owners, their family and their guests in order they may enjoy more frequent and extended visits to Inverinate, the application says.
The proposals include two new lodges - Ptarmigan which would add 9 bedrooms and Benula which would feature 19 bedrooms - plus a new property called Stag Burn House which would a further 9 bedrooms.
No date has yet been set for the proposals to come before the council's planning committee for a decision to be made.
Sheikh Mohammed bought the estate more than 30 years ago.
In 2014, the local authority approved plans for a new 16-bedroom mansion, including a swimming pool and gym.
In 2015, the Dubai ruler overcome objections to win approval to build four helicopter landing pads on his remote Highland estate in Scotland.
A local businesswoman had objected to the plans for the helipads to allow corporate and private guests to be flown straight into the 63,000-acre Inverinate Estate in Lochalsh.
