The leaders of the emirates have declared three-day mourning periods
Across the UAE, prominent officials and the country’s leaders have offered their condolences for the mother of UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikha Hessa bint Mohammed Khalifa Al Nahyan.
Among those to have issued condolence statements have been His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
“My deep condolences to UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and all the people of the UAE, on our loss of his mother Her Highness Sheikh Hessa bint Mohammed Al Nahyan,” Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid wrote on Twitter. “May the rest in peace.”
Other condolence messages have also come from His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah Ruler Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Fujairah Ruler Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Ajman Ruler Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi.
Each leader has declared a three-day period of mourning in their respective emirate.
Additionally, messages of condolence have been coming from UAE residents – Emiratis and expats alike – as well as companies and observers based both in the UAE and abroad.
“RIP Sheikha Hessa, mother of UAE Ruler Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed,” wrote Elizabeth Dickson, the senior Arabian Penninsula analyst at Crisis Group, an international NGO. “What an extraordinary life, helping not just a son but a nation to be born and grow.”
