ABU DHABI // Schools rated "poor" or "very poor" will not be permitted to register new pupils, the Abu Dhabi Education Council on Tuesday said.
Twenty-six schools given these ratings, based on the regulator’s latest school inspections report, were told of the decision in March.
Hamad Al Dhaheri, an executive director at the authority, said the decision would remain in place until those schools improved to at least "satisfactory" by the next inspection.
Mr Al Dhaheri urged schools to take serious action to meet the regulator’s requirements.
The regulator gives schools detailed feedback highlighting their weaknesses, and schools are required to provide improvement plans and development strategies.
Last week education experts in Dubai spoke about the vicious cycle facing schools rated as week, as they are unable to raise tuition fees to make improvements.
Industry experts said the quality of education depended on the quality of teachers.
But in many cases schools that performed the worst also had to cater to lower-income families, so they had to strike a balance between increasing resources and what parents could afford.
