Over 13,000 ships traverse the Dubai Creek annually and the improvements are targeted at ensuring their safe docking in the area
Dubai Municipality plans to spend Dhs112m to fix certain sections of its famous creek that have been damaged and dilapidated over the past 50 years.
The project is expected to take 14-months and will replace and rehabilitate damaged sections of the Dubai Creek’s concrete wall in parts of Deira and Bur Dubai.
Over 13,000 ships traverse the creek annually and the improvements are targeted at ensuring their safe docking in the area. As a result, the project will be divided into two phases, with the first involving the restoration of a 2.1 km stretch along the Deira side of Dubai Creek and the second covering a 2.3 km stretch on the Bur Dubai side.
The municipality said the upgrade will go as far as “reconstructing sections that have been damaged and dilapidated over the past 50 years, and preventing potential flooding during harsh weather conditions.”
Meanwhile, the director-general of Dubai Municipality, Dawoud Al Hajri, said the project will help boost the security and safety of maritime operations in the creek, as well as mitigate against any risks around rising sea levels.
“We have implemented several measures to mitigate the risks posed by climate change and rising sea levels, closely monitoring changes on both sides of the creek. Furthermore, we have conducted technical studies to devise construction designs that can enhance the efficiency of the marine docks on both banks. These designs adhere to the highest global standards, ensuring the preservation of the supporting walls’ stability and safeguarding against increased flooding during seasonal weather conditions.” Al Hajri said.
