Fragrances, skin care, body and home products that celebrate the traditions of Provence
The L’Occitane en Provence story started 40 years ago with 23 year old Olivier Baussan, a young man with a dream to preserve and celebrate the traditions of Provence.. Armed with nothing but an alambic, a small truck and a stellar knowledge of plants, Olivier distilled essential oil from wild Rosemary and starting selling them in Provence’s humble local markets.
That same year, 1976, saw Olivier purchase a disused soap factory in Manosque (another Provençal village) and revive the traditional art of Marseille soap making. Soon, the L’Occitane en Provence product line exploded, with all of its products still being made at its home in Manosque.
L’Occitane en Provence prides itself on staying close to its roots, with the majority of their ingredients coming from the backyard in the French countryside, save for two ingredients, the Immortelle flower and shea butter. The former is the floral emblem of Corsica and easily one of the company’s favourite ingredients, so much so that L’Occitane en Provence has its own field of the rare flower in Corsica, working only with farmers who rely on traditional agricultural methods. The second non-Provençal ingredient, shea butter, is sourced directly from fair trade women’s groups in Burkina Faso.
The company’s commitment to only the best products, sourced responsibly goes beyond just words. At no point during the production process do they use animal testing, animal products or animal by-products (except for beehive products) and L’Occitane en Provence continuously donates money towards sustainable and traditional farming practices of several of the plants that they use themselves, as well as social causes including the emancipation of women. Their efforts have seen them be lauded as exemplary by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP.)
