Game Theory: UAE mobile game enthusiasts play games more than 5 times a day

More than 86 per cent of smartphone users between 16 and 36-years identify as “mobile gamers”

Gaming is big news, and big money. Globally, the gaming industry is set to reach US$174 billion with mobile games accounting for 52 per cent of revenues by 2021. The UAE is currently ranked 35th worldwide amongst the world’s top 100 gaming markets based on their revenue estimates as of October 2018, with a total revenue of US$324 million. More than 80 per cent of smartphone users in the UAE identify as “mobile gamers” including 86 per cent of users between 16 and 36-years.

In its evolution, the smartphone’s role as a gaming tool has never been more important. Remember how cameras in smartphones disrupted photography, and ended up as a key consideration among consumers choosing their devices? Similarly, the smartphones of today must carry features that are compatible with the appetite and enthusiasm of mobile gamers. These characteristics are a large screen, a strong battery, robust performance including a cooling functionality and an excellent camera system.

Screen size becomes vital in order to appeal to gamers. As every gamer will confirm, in games, whoever shoots first, wins. This is particularly true for battle royal games. However, due to the limitations in screen sizes in many devices, many players end up getting picked off before they are even able to see their opponents, reinforcing the maxim that size does matter! Moreover, a display with a smart brightness management solution that automatically optimizes screen brightness for different scenarios is valued as an asset by gamers. Furthermore, an optimum gaming experience requires a super sound system that ideally has dual stereo speakers.

Gamers playing the latest games are always on the lookout for the best performance from their smartphones - even with all graphical settings tuned to max. More importantly, for high performance gaming activity, smartphones need to factor in cooling technology, which allow the CPU and GPU to perform in top form for a longer period of time. Cooling is essential to keeping a device at optimal performance.

A recent study on the gaming market in the UAE highlighted that 86% of Centennials and 79% of Gen Xers identify as “mobile gamers”.[v] It has also been noted that Emirati mobile gamers average 20 to 40 minutes a day of gameplay and majority of those who play mobile games every day, play games 5 times or more. It is obvious that the speed and connectivity is of prime importance considering that 77% of Emirati mobile gamers select “home” for location as being their preferred setting to play games.

It is clear that the gaming industry has taken off in the recent past and smartphone makers haven’t done much to address the needs of mobile gamers in terms of matching the specs of the smartphones to be compatible with intensive gaming. The smartphone industry for a long time has been lagging on the battery life and design elements to enable a smooth and an all-consuming experience for mobile gamers.
