New enhanced smart gates opened at DXB
Just 17% of passengers at Dubai Airport use the service which takes 15 seconds to pass through
Dubai Airports unveiled its latest, enhanced set of smart gates at arrivals in Terminal 1, which authorities said will speed up the processing of residents returning to the city.
The 20 new smart gates in arrivals are in addition to the 10 installed last year in departures at Terminal 1. In total, some 127 smart gates are available across the entire airport reducing average transaction times from minutes to under 10-15 seconds.
Michael Ibbitson, Executive Vice President, Technology & Infrastructure at Dubai Airports, said the gates slash transaction times to just ten to 15 seconds, helping to cut queues. He encouraged more to embrace the technology, which can be used with any Emirates ID card, e-gate card or a QR barcode generated via the GDRFA smartphone app.
“What’s surprising is that only 17% of our passengers take advantage of the service,” Ibbitson said.
“If you have a UAE residency card, don’t wait in line, use it. If you have a machine-readable passport, register it with immigration authorities. It will save you time and make your journey even more enjoyable.”
Smart gates can be used by UAE citizens and residents, GCC nationals and passport holders from a number of countries that are eligible for visa on arrival.
In total, more than 5.5 million travellers used the smart gates at DXB during 2017.
The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) and Emaratech, the technology provider behind the project, completed the installation of the new gates.
