Man was stabbed in New Year row
A construction worker is accused of stabbing his roommate during New Year’s Eve celebrations because the victim said he wanted to have sex with the man’s wife, a court was told.
Dubai Court of First Instance heard that the pair were drinking alcohol in their room when the attack happened.
Prosecutors said the two Indian men were together at their labour accommodation in Al Qusais when, about 1.30am on January 1, the defendant attacked the victim.
“He picked up my phone and smashed it then started kicking my bed, I didn’t say or do anything because I didn’t want any trouble,” said the 42-year-old victim in records.
He said the accused then walked towards him, raised a knife and stabbed him in the abdomen.
“I don’t know what happened and I woke up at the hospital,” he said.
A witness told prosecutors that he was celebrating with the men then left for a while. When he returned, he found the victim bleeding on the floor.
“I called police immediately,” said the 29-year-old supervisor, from Nepal.
Police arrested the defendant five hours later.
The court heard the defendant claimed he was angry because the victim insulted him by saying he wanted to have sex with his wife.
“He confessed that he was speaking with his wife on the phone from India and they were congratulating each other when the victim came and told him that he wanted to have sex with his wife,” a policeman said in records.
A verdict is due on December 15.
