Ireland signs up to take part in Expo 2020 Dubai
Minister of State for Higher Education confirms gov't has formally agreed to participate in mega event
Ireland is to take part in the Expo 2020 in Dubai, the country’s Minister of State for Higher Education, Mary Mitchell O’Connor, has announced.
O’Connor, who wraps up a visit to the UAE on Friday, told state news agency WAM that the Irish Government has now formally agreed to participate in the mega event.
There was much that Ireland had to contribute around the Expo 2020 theme of Connecting Minds, Creating the Future, she said, mentioning her country’s performance in fields such as culture, innovation, research and development, science and its "green sustainable policy" in terms of food production.
She added that Ireland and the UAE are "naturally compatible economic partners".
Expo 2020 will run for six months from October 20, 2020 and expects to welcome more than 200 participants, including more than 180 nations, multinational organisations, businesses and educational institutions.
Expo 2020 expects to receive 25 million visits, with 70 percent of visitors due to come from outside the UAE – the largest proportion in the 167-year history of World Expos.
More than 170 nations have already either publically or privately confirmed their participation. Further national participation announcements are expected in the coming months.
