Dubai introduces free charging, fee wavers for electric vehicles
The new incentives aim to reduce the emirate’s carbon footprint
Dubai is introducing free charging, designated parking spaces and wavers on fees to encourage the use of electric vehicles.
New incentives announced in the emirate on Sunday will allow electric car owners to charge their vehicles for free until 2019.
They will also be provided with free vehicle registration and renewal fees, a free salik tag and designated parking in some areas, according to officials.
The incentives will save money for electric vehicles owners but fall short of subsidies or rebates offered in other markets that cover 25 per cent or more of the vehicle’s cost.
Electric vehicle firm Tesla recently opened a sales room in Dubai with the aim of creating a client base in the region.
Tesla vehicles are also now being used for limousines by Dubai Taxi Corporation.
The emirate is currently undertaking a smart autonomous mobility strategy aimed at making 25 per cent of total journeys driverless by 2030.
The Dubai government has also announced plans to make up to 10 per cent of its new fleet orders electric and hybrid vehicles.
