Abu Dhabi set to introduce road tolls
Drivers who cross the toll and do not pay the fee can face fines not exceeding AED10,000
Abu Dhabi is set to introduce road tolls similar to the Salik electronic toll system in Dubai, according to a new law issued by President Sheikh Khalifa.
Law No 17 of 2017 states that the Department of Transport (DoT) will determine the areas where the tariff will be applied, as well as its fee and operation times, several local Arabic media reported.
The draft law, which will outline details of charges and penalties, will be submitted to the general secretariat of the executive council for approval.
The DoT will be in charge of collecting the tariff from vehicle owners that pass through the tolled areas.
The way in which the fee will be collected is yet to be revealed.
Vehicles that will be exempt from the tariff include ambulances, public buses, motorcycles and those belonging to the Armed Forces and Civil Defence.
Other cars may be excluded by the executive council depending on a proposal by the chairman of the DoT.
Measures in the form of fines will be issued against offenders who evade payment of the road toll by any means, including concealing the car’s plate number.
Drivers who cross the toll and do not pay the fee can face fines not exceeding AED10,000, according to the law. Total fines imposed on one vehicle will not exceed AED25,000 within a full year from the date of committing the first offence.
Salik was introduced in Dubai in July 2007, to reportedly help ease traffic on popular roads such as Sheikh Zayed Road.
