Move by transport authority comes amid 26 fatalities in past two years
Dubai's transport authority is to bring in new regulations regarding the operation of delivery motorbikes in a bid to improve safety.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in collaboration with the Dubai Police General HQ, Department of Economic Development (DED) and Dubai Municipality, has endorsed new specifications for delivery/courier boxes carried by motorbikes.
These stipulations will come into effect from June 6 and licensed motorbikes will be given a grace period to adapt to the new conditions until March 2018.
The move comes as data from the Traffic Department at Dubai Police reveals that motorbike accidents resulted in 26 fatalities in 2015 and 2016. It also showed that motorbikers were involved in 824 traffic offences in 2016, and 786 bikes were seized.
"Such statistics warranted the development of new standards to mitigate the hazards associated with motorbikes movement on roads,” said Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA’s Licensing Agency.
The new rules include the dimensions and shape of the rear box of the motorbike to avoid the risk of misbalancing the bike as well as the addition of reflector strips.
