Tesla’s self-driving Autopilot feature is now officially available in the UAE
You can even sign up for a test-drive to experience it yourself
Are you the proud owner of one of Tesla’s awesome electric cars? First off, colour us jealous, and secondly, have we got news for you.
The upstart vehicle manufacturer announced earlier today that its popular Autopilot feature is now finally available in the UAE.
“What’s Autopilot?” we hear you exclaim. Well, if you have to ask you were probably lying about owning a Tesla, but it’s cool, allow us to explain.
Autopilot is a feature built into the hardware all of Tesla’s cars (that’s the Model S, Model X and the upcoming Model 3) that gives them full self-driving capability at a safety level that is substantially greater than that of a human driver.
It uses a combination of eight surround cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors to provide 360 degrees of visibility at up to 250 metres of range. Essentially, that means that the car will be able to drive completely autonomously as it travels down Sheikh Zayed Road, and even park itself, without you ever needing to touch the steering wheel. Proper futuristic stuff.
All new Tesla bought in the UAE from now on will comes with the feature activated, whilst existing owners can expect it to be pushed out to their vehicles via a software update.
You can see it in action in the video below and, if you want to try it for yourself, Tesla are offering Autopilot test-drive sessions at their Dubai showroom.
