Italian firm secures patent for Dubai rotating tower
A Florence-based architecture firm has secured a new patent within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) for its rotating skyscraper project, the building’s architect said on Wednesday.
Italian-Israeli architect David Fisher, founder of Dynamic Architecture Group, said the design of the shape-changing 80-storey Dynamic Tower has been patented in the region, which is amongst its top target locations for the project.
"We have just got a patent in the GCC for the ‘building in motion’ Dynamic Tower a few weeks ago," he told Thomson Reuters Projects on the sidelines of the Skyscraper Summit conference in Dubai.
The architect said he was hopeful the Dubai project would be complete by 2020, but did not give any further details.
While Fisher hopes Dubai will be the first location for the Dynamic Tower project, he did not specify if a site in the emirate has been identified and said locations in New York, Paris and London were also being considered.
In addition to the GCC, the firm has also secured patents for the project in the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe.
Fisher first announced the concept at a press conference in New York in 2008. As part of the design, the 80-storey tower’s apartments would spin a full 360 degrees around a central column, which would be powered using wind turbines located between each floor, according to a BBC report in June, 2008.
The $700 million project was originally scheduled to be built in Dubai in 2010, with a similar one also planned for Moscow, the report added.
