Dubai's hi-tech Al Burj radars will catch your speed even if you slow down
The radars have the ability to measure the speed at all points instead of a certain point.
Motorists who have been 'cheating' speed radars on Dubai roads by slowing down as they get near them will have to watch their back now.
The Dubai Traffic Department will activate 'Al Burj' radars that calculate the average speed of motorists on Dubai roads.
Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of the department, said it is all set to implement the new system.
He said the radars will be used in calculating the speed in a certain sector. It will calculate the speed at the entry and exit of the sector and the average speed will be calculated based on the distance and interval in covering it. The radars have the ability to measure the speed at all points instead of a certain point.

The official said some drivers know the locations of the radars and slow down as they approach them.
Once they cross them, they again start speeding. This has made the department take the step and develop the radars that will remain almost in the same locations but the directions would be changed.
Col. Al Mazroui said that the introduction of this technology will enhance driving safety and reduce deaths and injuries on Dubai roads.
The new radars could take pictures from the back of the vehicle. It doesn't necessarily flash when a motorist passes it, but will flash if he/she accelerates above the limit soon after. And the motorists would not know in which direction has a particular radar been set.
He said all radars on the highways and internal roads would be adjusted to facilitate capturing images from either direction.
The department had introduced the advanced radars three months ago and conducted an experiment on Hatta-Dubai Road.
Col. Saif Muhair Al Mazroui said Al Burj Radar is one of the latest comprehensive technologies and has many features.
During the experiment it was found that many vehicles started speeding as they crossed the radars. "Only 20 vehicles were caught speeding by the radars from the front," he added.
