Officers at the Al Muraqqabat police station were first informed of the case when a nephew of the businessman informed officers that he had lost contact with his uncle while he was in Dubai, police said in a statement.
Preliminary investigations found that the American was a frequent visitor to the emirate, and officers quickly located the hotel in which he was staying.
“Our teams had informed the Dubai Public Prosecution to get the legal search warrant when they opened the hotel room rented by the businessman,” said Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, commander-in-chief of Dubai Police, adding that the businessman was found dead in the room.
Inspections showed that the businessman had been struck by a wooden drawer where he was staying and that he had been dead for approximately 48 hours.
Lieutenant Colonel Adel Al Joker, the director of CID at Dubai Police, said that all available teams were assigned to identify the perpetrators.
Using artificial intelligence techniques at the police data analysis centre, police were able to identify an Arab national who had accompanied the businessman to his hotel room.
He was arrested promptly afterwards, and admitted that he had gone with the businessman and planned to steal his wallet after beating him with a wooden plank. He fled after confirming that the victim was unconscious.
The suspect allegedly admitted to stealing a bankcard from the businessman and passing it on to an accomplice, who helped him withdraw cash from an ATM.
