Welcome to St. Michael Catholic Church in Wheaton, IL
History’s first recorded question was posed by our holy patron, Saint Michael the Archangel: “Who is like God?” In fact, the name “Michael” is the Hebrew transliteration of that very question. At the dawn of time it was asked rhetorically in response to Satan’s boast that he would make himself like God.
That same temptation – the desire to be like God – proved fatal for Adam and Eve. As a consequence, we, their descendants, must wrestle with that same temptation – to usurp God’s authority and decide for ourselves what is right or wrong. And so it is a question that I feel must be firmly answered in the minds of each and every person who enters these doors: “Who is like God?”
As pastor of St. Michael Parish, I embrace as my top priority the responsibility of raising up new saints for God’s Kingdom; to come to know Jesus Christ – to experience his humility (especially in the sacrament of the Eucharist) and his mercy (especially in the sacrament of Reconciliation) – in such a way that the temptation to thrust Him aside and become “like God” ourselves ceases to hold any allure.
I wholeheartedly welcome you to St. Michael Parish, and invite you to come and experience for yourself what it means to be a beloved son or daughter of God Himself. Jesus said, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock” (Rev. 3:20). Our doors are open to you. Jesus Himself invites you. May you come and learn the answer to the world’s most ancient question: “Who is like God?”
